Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that affects a large number of people. The fundamental cause of this condition is a lack of insulin synthesis or reduced insulin action. A large variety of in vivo and in vitro models have been developed to investigate the antidiabetic effect's fundamental mechanism. Several approaches for determining the anti-diabetic properties of plant extracts or isolated chemicals have been reported to be successful. This review covers major animal models used for the study of antidiabetic effect of a drug or substance, that could help in the development of new medicine to treat diabetes more effectively and with fewer or no adverse effects.
